Mitch Smith was hired at Dura GAS Milan Metal Systems, LLC, as a temporary employee making $9 hour. Five years later, thanks to an apprenticeship program facilitated by Washtenaw Community College, he’s a card-carrying tool and die journeyman making more than triple that hourly rate.

Roofers Union brings national training to WCC

A fourth trade union will make Washtenaw Community College and the Ann Arbor area its home base for instructor training when the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers & Allied Workers holds its inaugural National Instructor Training Program June 15-19, 2020.

WCC graduate rises from custodian to RN at University Hospital

It’s the same place, but a changed man working at Michigan Medicine’s University Hospital. In the rooms where he was once responsible for cleaning, polishing, vacuuming and mopping, Carlos Vasquez now cares for patients, performs diagnostic tests, administers medications, and provides emotional support to patients and their families.

Matthew Burtell was floating in the Sea of Japan when he first contacted Washtenaw Community College. Or maybe he was 2,000 miles south, somewhere in the South China Sea. The U.S. Navy isn’t too keen on sharing the whereabouts of its aircraft carriers, so sometimes even an Information Systems Technician aboard the USS Ronald Reagan isn’t sure exactly where he’s located.

Scholarship recipient has altruistic ambitions

Officially, Martaveius Taylor is majoring in Digital Video Production at Washtenaw Community College. But beyond pursuing a particular degree, the 27-year-old is taking classes with a very specific result in mind: learning to successfully launch, promote and build a non-profit organization that will provide rent-to-own tiny homes and shipping container homes to low-income and homeless individuals.
